Differences Between Botox and Dysport Injectables

The following is essential to the understanding of the differences between

Dysport and Botox

The short answer

Similarities

Botox and Dysport are the same Neurotoxins, Clostridium botulinum

Both Render the release of acetylcholine (ACH), Muscle constriction, inactive for a period of approximately 90 days.

both reduce the muscular induced appearance of lines and wrinkles.   Albeit with different efficacies.

Differences

Botox was the first to market, followed by Dysport.  The time on the market reflects the cost, Botox being the most expensive, Followed by Dysport.  the price difference is simply due to marketing.   There is again no difference in the toxin.

Botox is the largest of the molecules and therefore has the slowest onset , 3-5 days.  As it cannot be injected directly into the muscle due to its molecular size.  Additionally, Botox has a large number of Non- essential Accessory proteins (NAPS) which must be cleaved from the toxin,  following injection, to become active.  This is the reason for the slow onset when compared to Dysport.

Dysport most effective, is a much smaller molecule than Botox,  Dysport is injected into the muscle,  and with less NAPS, it begins to work much faster, typically within 24-48 hours.

What Is Involved In  Cosmetic Injections?

Using a very fine needle, injectables are placed directly into facial muscles that are causing furrows and lines. No anesthetic is required, but some doctors choose to numb the area to be injected with ice packs or a topical anesthetic cream. Results can usually be seen within a few days of treatment, and typically last up to 4 months, although areas that are treated on a regular basis may retain results longer. Injections should be given only by qualified medical professionals.

Candidates For Injectables

According to the manufacturer’s websites, candidates for injectable are “adults less than 65 years of age” who want “temporary improvement in the look of moderate-to-severe frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines).” It may not be suitable for those with the following:

  • Allergies to Dysport injectable or its ingredients

  • An allergy to cow’s milk protein

  • Surgical facial changes

  • Very weak muscles in the treatment area

  • A face that looks very different on each side

  • Inflammation or infection in the area to be injected

  • Droopy eyelids or sagging eyelid folds

  • Deep facial scars

  • Thick, oily skin

  • Wrinkles that cannot be smoothed when spread apart
