What Is A Chin Augmentation?
The chin plays a prominent role in the appearance of the lower 1/3 of the face. Chin size and position will determine whether you have an aesthetically pleasing profile. A chin that is receding or too small can make an average size nose look disproportionately large, throwing the profile out of balance. A chin that is too large and over-projecting can also create an undesirable profile. Who Is A Candidate For A Chin Augmentation / Reduction?
If you have a weak or receding chin that is out of balance with other facial features you may be a candidate for a chin implant. Placing a chin implant can improve your profile as well as your neck contour. If you have a chin that is too large or protrudes it may need to be reduced and set back.
How Is The Procedure Performed?
The most common approach to augment the chin is by placement of an implant through a small incision made under the chin. This is very effective for small to moderate enhancements of the chin. For large advancements, an alternative technique is to make an incision inside the lower lip, make a cut in the bone of the chin and slide it forward. This is usually secured with plates and screws. Chin implants are available in a wide variety of sizes and shapes which allows the surgeon to custom fit to the patient’s needs.
